Auditor Help: Reporting Hidden Servers

Any system that does not appear in the browse list, but meets the following conditions, can be manually defined using "selection sets" with a new "hidden" attribute:

  • The non-browsable computers must be on a network with netbios over tcp/ip enabled (NetBT).
  • The computers must have some form of NetBios name resolution.
  • NT servers and workstations must be running the server and workstation service.
  • W2K servers and workstations must have at least "File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks" enabled.

To report hidden servers (via scheduled reports):

  1. Run the Ecora software.
  2. Select Edit.... Selection Sets... from the main menu.
  3. In Selection Editor, right-click on the Selection Files node and select New from the menu.
  4. Select Selection File (Template)... and a new selection file appears in the list.
Helpful Hint Tip: You can also create a selection set then modify it to add hidden servers by selecting and existing file to edit in step 3 and proceeding with step 6.
  5. Select the New Selection File and name the file in the right pane (Value field, Name attribute).
  6. Expand the New selection file by clicking on the plus (+) sign.
  7. Expand until you locate and select the Domain node.
  8. If the domain is hidden, double-click on the False value for the Hidden attribute in the right pane and choose True from the drop-down menu.
Helpful Hint Tip: To add additional domains, right-click on the Windows node above and choose New.
  9. Right-click on the Domain node and choose New... Server.
  10. Select the new server item (in the tree in the left pane).
  11. Name the server in the right-pane Value field for the Name attribute.
  12. If the server is hidden, double-click on the False value for the Hidden attribute in the right pane and choose True from the drop-down menu.
  13. Repeat steps 9 - 12 for as many domains and servers as you wish to document in this (scheduled) collection / report.
  14. When you are finished, Close.
  15. Proceed with scheduling a task for this selection set.
